Editing Open SIS

Hi
I wanted to add and remove some features from the Open sis
So i have it installed on my XAMPP server and working fine
But if I want to edit some things like remove some section from the whole application how do I do this and do I need the SVN edition files or I can do this with the files I downloaded for the community edition only.
I mean the files which I have loaded onto xampp for the Open sis can I edit these and see the difference live on the localhost?
Please guide me what all will I need to get this done and the editing the code stuff and all

Sure, you can edit the code and test it out locally. If you build something useful that the community and its users can benefit, then you need to submit the addition back to the openSIS-CE.

what all would I need to edit the codes for open sis application.
and what all languages would I need to know
I know php and my sql would that be enough?
What softwares would I need to mount the SVN files?
